2016 Maryland Senior Olympics

Twenty-four players battled through torrential rain on Saturday (October 1) and basked in bright sunshine on Sunday (October 2) for the fourth annual Maryland Senior Olympics Croquet Tournament. The Waterford doubles contest, divided into two flights rated by USCA handicaps, was played on two lawns at West River, MD home of the West River Wickets and two at the Ginger Cove Retirement Community in Annapolis, MD. Each participant played four games after which the top four in each flight contested for gold and silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to the next two players in the rankings.

Calvert Chaney (West River Wickets) and Byron Hicks (formerly of West River Wickets who now lives in South Carolina) won gold in A Flight. B Flight gold medal winners were Sue Laging (Rochester, NY) and James Chan (West River Wickets). Eileen Faye (Ginger Cove), who is 94, won all four of her first round games in B flight but had to settle for silver in the final.

The event, hosted by West River Wickets and the Ginger Cove Croquet Club, attracted players from Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and South Carolina. Medals were presented by Chris Nelson, President of St. John's College.
